New Adhaar Policy in Asaam

In a historic decision taken on June 13, 2026 by the Assam Cabinet, the authorities have decided to stop Aadhaar card issuance in the state owing to the anxieties regarding illegal migration. Key highlights of the decisions are:

New Aadhaar Policy for Assam

Restriction for Adults: The state government has decided to stop the issuance of new Aadhaar cards to individuals above the age of 18.

Reason: Himanta Biswa Sarma Chief Minister of the state said that Aadhaar enrollment has reached the "saturation point" in the state with some of the districts having the enrollments of more than 100% and is planning to ensure no illegal immigrants procure the Aadhaar card and to confirm the identity of the persons for whom the duplicate cards will be issued.

Exemptions:

Tea Garden Community and Scheduled Tribes (ST): Individuals from these communities are exempted from this restriction until March 31, 2027, as many members are still in the process of obtaining their cards.

Minors: Aadhaar enrollment will continue as usual for children below the age of 18.

Exceptional Cases: For adults who might require an Aadhaar card under exceptional circumstances, the application must be submitted to the District Commissioner. The proposal will then be forwarded to the state government, which will determine the applicant's eligibility.

Full Implementation:The restriction will be fully enforced from April 1, 2027, at which point no new Aadhaar cards will be issued to anyone over 18, regardless of their community.

The state government's new decision is aimed at enhancing the process of identity verification and the fight against illegal migration from Bangladesh.
