Himanta Biswa Sarma would become the Chief Minister of Assam

A meeting of the BJP legislative party is scheduled to take place today in Assam to elect the leader of the legislative group. Following the selection of the party leader during this session, a meeting of the NDA legislative party will be held.

Himanta Biswa Sarma

The BJP has appointed its former National President and Union Health Minister, J.P. Nadda, along with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini, as observers to oversee the election of the legislative party leader. Both leaders arrived in Guwahati late this evening. Nadda and Saini were welcomed by the State BJP President, Dilip Saikia. They arrived together with Acting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, having just attended the swearing-in ceremony in West Bengal. Dr. Sarma had tendered his resignation on May 6; he is currently serving as the Acting Chief Minister. Himanta's election as the leader of the legislative party is considered a foregone conclusion; should he be elected, he will take the oath as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term.

The swearing-in ceremony

The swearing-in ceremony for Assam's new government will take place on the morning of May 12 at 11:00 AM. The ceremony will be held at the Khanapara Veterinary College Field in Guwahati. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior BJP leaders are expected to attend the event. Additionally, Chief Ministers from approximately 22 states have also been invited. In the elections, the results of which were declared on May 4, the BJP-led NDA secured a resounding victory. In the 126-seat Legislative Assembly, the BJP won 82 seats. The Congress secured 19 seats and the BPF won 10, while the AGP obtained 10 seats and the AIUDF secured two. In the 2026 elections, the BJP received overwhelming support, primarily from Hindu voters. The Congress achieved success mainly in Muslim-majority constituencies, though its overall seat tally remained quite low. The support base of the AIUDF has weakened significantly. In Assam, the majority mark stands at 64 seats; the BJP has won more than a majority of seats on its own.
