The National Medical Commission (NMC) has good news for NEET UG 2026 aspirants. The number of MBBS seats and medical colleges in India has increased this year. The Health Minister also shared the medical seat figures in the Rajya Sabha.

More than 11,000 MBBS seats have been added in India for the 2025-26 session. Clearly, the number of medical colleges in the country has also increased.

According to data available on the NMC portal, the total number of MBBS seats in India was 118,190 as of last year (2025). In 2026, the number of MBBS seats in the country has increased to 129,603.

The new data has also been updated on the NMC website, nmc.org.in.

The National Medical Commission has uploaded data for both 2025 and 2026 on its official website. According to this, the number of medical colleges in India, including institutions like AIIMS and JIPMER, was 780 in 2025. This number has increased to 824 in 2026. These are the colleges that offer MBBS courses.

In 2014, there were 387 medical colleges in the country. NEET UG seats were around 51,000, which has now reached over 1.25 lakh. Meanwhile, NEET PG seats, which were around 31,000, have now increased to over 85,000.

Other Courses after 12th without NEET exam, can also build a strong career.

Becoming a doctor isn't the only path in the medical field. There are many courses that don't require NEET. Pursuing a Pharmacy (B.Pharm or D.Pharm) offers job opportunities in pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, and the research sector. A BSc in Nursing, GNM is also a good option, offering opportunities to work in hospitals and the healthcare sector.

Paramedical courses, such as BMRIT (Radiology) and BMLT (Lab Technology), are also in high demand. These fields offer job opportunities in both the government and private sectors. 

Courses like BSc in Agriculture are also considered strong career options, offering good jobs in the agricultural sector, research organizations, and government departments.

BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications) is a popular course. It can lead to careers in the IT sector, software development, and data-related work. Fields like cybersecurity and artificial intelligence are also rapidly growing, offering good job opportunities after a skill-based course.

A BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) is considered a good option for pursuing a career in the corporate sector. An MBA can then lead to a career in management. Similarly, law is a strong career option. A BA LLB or BBA LLB can lead to careers in law, corporate law, and judiciary. Many colleges also require exams like CLAT or AILET for admission.

If you're interested in creative fields, courses like fashion designing, graphic designing, and interior design can be good options. Furthermore, after completing journalism and mass communication, you can work in the media industry, digital platforms, and the content sector. Hotel management is also a popular course. After this, a career can be made in the hotel industry, airlines and tourism sector.
