Creating Green Jobs in India : Career Opportunity in Renewable Energy Sector

Maa Shaila Foundation

What are green jobs?

Green jobs are decent, sustainable employment roles that contribute directly to preserving, restoring, or enhancing environmental quality. They focus on reducing carbon emissions, minimizing waste and pollution, increasing energy efficiency, and protecting ecosystems. These jobs span sectors like renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and eco-friendly manufacturing.

The growing challenges of climate change and pollution are leading to a global shift towards a "green economy". Green jobs are those that help protect the environment, conserve energy, or generate clean energy, rather than harming it.

According to a CEEW report, the renewable energy sector could create 3.4 million jobs, green hydrogen could create over 600,000 skilled jobs, and the electric vehicle ecosystem could create 10 million direct jobs.

India has set a target of achieving 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030. Sectors like solar, wind, and green hydrogen will play a key role in this transformation. This transformation is also rapidly creating new employment opportunities.
