CBSE 12th Music Syllabus & Preparation Tips

Vilambit/Drut Khayals, Dhrupad, Tarana, and Ragas Bhairav, Bageshri, and Malkauns are the main topics of the CBSE Class 12 Hindustani Music Vocal (Code 034) syllabus for 2025–2026. Time theory, technical jargon, and musician biographies are examples of theory. A 30-mark theory paper and a 70-mark practical exam make up the evaluation format.


Practical Syllabus (70 Marks)

  • Ragas: Detailed study of Bhairav, Bageshri, and Malkauns.
  • Compositions:
    • One Vilambit Khayal with simple elaborations and Tanas in any two prescribed Ragas.
    • One Drut Khayal with elaborations and Tanas in each of the three prescribed Ragas.
    • One Tarana and one Dhamar with Dugun and Chaugun in prescribed Ragas.
  • Raga Recognition: Identify Ragas from swara phrases.
  • Tala Study: Recitation of the Thekas of Jhaptala, Rupak, and Dhamar with Dugun and Chaugun.
  • Tuning: Tuning of the Tanpura.
  • Practical File: Notations of compositions and description of Ragas/Talas.

Theory Syllabus (30 Marks)

Unit 1: Basic Concepts: Alankar, Kan, Meend, Khatka, Murki, Gamak, Gram, Murchhana, Alap, and Tana.
  • Unit 2: Time Theory of Ragas: Historical development.
  • Unit 3: Music Literature & Musicians: Study of Sangeet Ratnakar and Sangeet Parijat. Biographies of Faiyaz Khan, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, and Krishna Rao Shankar Pandit.
  • Unit 4: Talas & Tanpura: Notation of Jhaptala, Rupak, and Dhamar with Thah, Dugun, Tigun, and Chaugun. Tuning of Tanpura.
  • Unit 5: Raga Study: Detailed/critical study of prescribed Ragas (Bhairav, Bageshri, Malkauns).

Practical Examination Structure

Time: 20-25 Minutes per candidate.
  • Components:
    • Raga Performance (Vilambit/Drut) - 12 marks.
    • Dhrupad/Tarana - 14 marks.
    • Examiner's Choice (Raga) - 12 marks.
    • Raga Recognition - 5 marks.
    • Tala/Theka Recitation - 8 marks.
    • Practical File/Viva - 5+5=10 marks.
    • Continuous Assessment - 5 marks.

Theory & Practical Preparation Tips

Study Material: Focus on NCERT books, particularly the definitions, Raag parichay, and taal notations.
