How to make sentences affirmative to negative

Affirmative and Negative sentences

👉A sentence having not, no or never in it is called a Negative Sentence.

How to make sentences Negative :

1. The Verb be

We put not after the various forms of the Verb be:

is - is not (isn't);  am not;  are- are not (aren't)
was - was not (wasn't),  were  -  were not (weren't)

For example :

Affirmative                                                                                Negative

1. It is very warm here.                                                        It is not very warm here.
2. I am hungry.                                                                     I am not hungry.
3. We are leaving.                                                                 We are not leaving.
4. He was absent yesterday.                                                 He was not absent yesterday.
5.They were here yesterday.                                                They were not here yesterday.

In case of will be and shall be, we put not after will or shall

Will be - will not (won't) be ;  shall be  -  shall not (shan't) be
    
For example : 

Affirmative                                                                                 Negative

1. He will be going there.                                                        He will not be going there.
2. I shall be going there.                                                          I shall not be going there.


2. The Verb have (has, had)

When have shows possession, we use not with it.    

For example :

Affirmative                                                                                Negative

1. I have a car.                                                                        I have no car.
2. He has a bat.                                                                       He has no bat.
3.This child had toys.                                                             This child had no toys.
4.They have something to say.                                               They have nothing to say.

When have is used as an Auxiliary Verb, we use not with it.

Have  -  have not  (haven't);  has  -  has not (hasn't);  had  -  had not (hadn't)

For example  :

Affirmative                                                                                Negative

1. We have done our homework.                                         We have not done our homework.
2. He has attended my marriage.                                         He has not attended my marriage.
3. He had gone to Delhi yesterday.                                      He had not gone to Delhi yesterday.


3. Auxiliary Verbs   

When the Auxiliary Verb is a form of a Modal Verb e.g. can, could, must 

we use not with it:

Can - cannot (can't),  Could -  could not (couldn't); Must - must not (mustn't)

For example :

Affirmative                                                                                Negative

1. I can sing well.                                                                I cannot sing well.
2. He could do his work easily.                                           He could not do his work easily.
3. She must attend the classes.                                            She must not attend the classes.
4. It may rain today.                                                            I may not rain today.


4. Verbs made up of two or more words

We put not after the first word.

For Example :

Affirmative                                                                                Negative

1. We should think ill of others.                                            We should not think ill of others.
2. I am keeping well.                                                              I am not keeping well.


5. Simple Present Tense :

We use do not or does not with the first form of the Verb :
  
 For example: 

Affirmative                                                                                Negative

1. He takes great care of his health.                                    He does not take great care of his health.
2. The flowers look fresh.                                                   The flowers do not look fresh.

 
6. Simple Past Tense

We use did not with the first form of the verb.

For example :

Affirmative                                                                                Negative

1. She got there in time.                                                     She did not get there in time.
2. Tom painted the fence.                                                   Tom did not paint the fence.

7. Imperative Sentence :

We put do not in the beginning of the sentence.

For example

Affirmative                                                                                Negative

1. Go upstairs                                                                    Do not go upstairs
2. Switch off the lights.                                                     Do not switch off the lights.

8. Study how a Negative Sentence can be written in two ways :

1. (a) Somebody has done it.
    (b) Nobody has done it.

2. (a) They have something to eat.
    (b) They have nothing to eat.

3.  (a) He told me something about him.
     (b) He did not tell me anything about him.

4. (a) I do not know either Ram or Shyam.
    (b) I know neither Ram nor Shyam.
