BUMS, or Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery, is a 5.5-year undergraduate degree program in the traditional Unani system of medicine. This system began in Greece and was developed in the Arab world and India. The program consists of 4.5 years of study followed by a one-year mandatory internship. To gain admission, students need a 10+2 (or equivalent) education with science subjects, including Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) oversees the program in India.

About the BUMS program  

Curriculum: The program blends traditional Unani medical knowledge with modern science. It covers subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and Unani therapeutics, emphasizing natural healing, herbs, and diet.  

Theories: Unani medicine is based on the idea that the body has four humors: Phlegm, Blood, Yellow Bile, and Black Bile. Good health depends on maintaining their balance.  

Duration: The total time to complete the program is 5.5 years, which includes 4.5 years of academic study and a one-year compulsory internship for practical experience.  

Admission requirements  

Education: Students need a 10+2 or equivalent qualification with at least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.  

Age: The minimum age is 17 years as of October 1st of the admission year.  

Entrance exam: Candidates usually must pass a national or state-level medical entrance test, like NEET-UG, to be accepted into top colleges.

Qualifications: Graduates can practice Unani medicine and surgery. They are often referred to as "Doctors" or "Hakims."

BHMS: Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery

The curriculum consists of four years of academics covering subjects like anatomy, physiology, and therapeutic techniques, followed by a mandatory six-month internship. To be eligible, students typically need to complete 12th grade with a background in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. They also need a minimum score and to pass an entrance exam.
