NExT Exam In India

National Exit Test (NExT) is a proposed exam for all MBBS, BAMS, BUMS, BSMS, and BHMS students in India. Passing NExT is necessary to finish the final year and get a license to practice medicine. Admissions to postgraduate courses will depend on a candidate's performance in NExT. This was introduced by the National Medical Commission Bill 2019.

The NExT exam has been delayed for three to four years because of implementation challenges, so it will not be introduced right away. It is meant to replace both the final MBBS exams and the NEET PG exam for postgraduate admissions. It will also function as a licensing exam for medical practice.

About NExT

NExT is a standardized qualifying and licensing exam for all medical graduates, no matter where they completed their MBBS. It will serve as a gateway to postgraduate admissions and will be necessary for obtaining a license to practice medicine in India.

Current status

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has postponed the NExT exam.

It was originally scheduled for August 2025, but this timeline has been pushed back due to legal, structural, and logistical issues.

The exam will not happen right away. Mock tests will take place before the final rollout.

How three exams will be merged into it

After the National Exit Test (NExT) is introduced, MBBS students will not need to take their final-year exam. They will sit for the NExT exam instead. Merit for PG admissions will be based on this test. This means there will be no need for NEET PG; NEET PG will be abolished. Additionally, students with medical degrees from abroad currently have to pass a separate test, the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE). In the future, they will also be required to take the NExT exam. Foreign MBBS students will take the NExT exam alongside Indian MBBS students instead of the FMGE exam. Thus, a total of three exams will be merged into NExT.

Recent Update on NExT

According to an NDTV report, the NMC Chairman stated that NExT will not be implemented right away. The NMC plans to conduct mock tests over the next three to four years, with the NMC covering all costs. These mock tests will evaluate how practical it is to hold the NExT exam. Feedback will also be gathered from students and institutions. The final decision on implementing NExT will come only after assessing the results and responses from these trial runs.
