Shatkarma
Shatkarma refers to six yogic practices. Shat means 'six' and karma means a 'method or technique'. It is a process that is involved in purification of our body to keep the body and mind healthy. The purification is done by using water, air or manipulation of certain organs of the body. All shatkarma processes are done on an empty stomach in the morning only.
The six shatkarma practices are:
1. Neti

It is the process of nasal cleaning. It is done using a small pot called neti pot. In the process, clean warm salt water is poured into one nostril, so that it leaves through the other. The process is then repeated on the other side, and the nose is dried by bending forward and by rapid breathing. It helps clean the nose and the sinus cavities thus relieving sinusitis, allergies and migrains.
2. Dhauti

It is the practice of cleaning the stomach. It is done on empty stomach in the morning. It helps remove undigested particles food from the previous day's meal causes problems in digestion.
3. Nauli
It is a technique for abdominal massage by churning the abdominal muscles to the left and right repeatedly. It tones up all the organs in the abdomen and helps to maintain perfect health.
4. Basti
It is the process of cleaning of the lower abdomen, especially the colon. It removes toxins from the body and cools it.
5. Kapalbhati
It is a type of Pranayama and is a powerful cleaning process where air is forcefully expelled from the lungs. This way stagnant carbon dioxide accumulated in the lower parts of the lungs is removed.
6. Trataka
It involves gazing on a steady candle flame without blinking the eyes. This practice improves the eyesight and gives steadiness of mind.
